Nathan Denison Bill, City of Springfield Park Commissioner 1899-1927. The Board of Park Commissioners greatly accepted a new playground from the Father of the Playground Movement in Springfield, Mr. Nathan D Bill. The gift of 19.03 acres in the East Forest Park Section, located between Plumtree Road and Allen Street, is an another exemplification of his constant interest in parks and playgrounds. Mr. Bill served the city as Parks Commissioner for 28 years. During this long period, his keen interest was actively expressed by the donation of four large tracts of land which are known as the Emerson Wright, Emily Bill, Ruth Elizabeth and Gordon Bill Playgrounds. Through his initial contributions, the movement was started to procure the land and make possible the development of Franconia and Veterans Memorial Golf Courses In recognition of Mr. Bill’s generosity, the new tract will be known as the Nathan D. Bill Playground. In making the gift Mr. Bill stipulated that the city equip and keep the field in proper condition, and expressed the wish that separate places on the ground might be assigned to children of different ages, and that grown people, too, might be provided with amusements.
